Thank You for Praying…

DSC_7546

The day we left for Cambodia I posted some specific prayer requests for our family. Thank you to all who have been praying for us since our departure. Now for an update on how the Lord worked through each request:

DSC_7558DSC_7543The Lord has given Josh good health, energy, and wisdom since our arrival to adjust very quickly to the time change and to make decisions concerning housing, car, and furniture. We decided on our housing shortly after arriving, but could not move in until July 17th. It took a little longer than expected to find a vehicle, but we are very pleased with the one God provided and look forward to getting it back from the shop (routine maintenance, which includes work on the steering column, radiator, gear box, ignition cylinder, etc.). Josh is getting lots of practice on his moto!

1017529_10152492274670668_3464037956897248372_nDSC_7539Our flights went really well. In Seattle they misplaced our double stroller and we had to board without it. Making the connecting flight was a bit crazy, but they did give us two wheelchairs to help with the kids and all our carry-ons. Becca and Isaiah slept during the 2nd and 3rd flights. Anna did well and only had a few crying spells. We had a bassinet for the first flight, but I ended up holding Anna on the other two flights. My milk supply did not suffer.

DSC_7537DSC_7528Becca loved flying! On the 2nd flight she watched Mary Poppins and then, after asking me to sing her goodnight songs, she snuggled up and went to sleep. Becca has made a very smooth transition to Cambodia. She continues to say she loves it here and the other day proclaimed “Cambodia was made for me!”

DSC_7532 DSC_7531Isaiah also did well on the flights. Both kids did well with the time change. The first night we all got to bed around 1am and slept until 7am. After that the kids had no trouble going to sleep at night and only had two 4:30 mornings (but the sleep Gestapo — aka Mommy — made them stay in bed until 6!). It was a pretty easy transition for them both. The mosquitoes haven’t been too bad here. We kill several every day but Isaiah hasn’t suffered too many bites.

DSC_7549Anna Grace has adjusted nicely to the heat of Cambodia. When we got here she went back to eating every three hours at night. Once we moved into our home she has begun sleeping longer during the night. God has blessed us with a very easy-going baby.

We’ve now been in our home for two weeks. We spent the first week cleaning, unpacking, and waiting for furniture to arrive (still waiting on our bed – they’ve delivered two so far, both too short for our mattress!). Josh spent lots of time repairing things and adding things like toilet paper holders, towel bars, and even a shower curtain in our bathroom. This week Josh started a language class and I’ve continued to get us all adjusted to our new home and think through our different routines and systems for living here. Sorry if you’re waiting for a response to an email – our days have been full of doing and we try to get to bed as soon as we can. I have lots to write about our trip, home, etc, but that will have to wait for another time.

We appreciate your prayers for us as we make Cambodia our home. Please pray that the Lord will continue to help us as we live here. Pray for wisdom regarding my language learning and Josh’s next step after this one-month class ends.

First Birthday Celebration in Cambodia

DSC_7518

DSC_7516 DSC_7523We celebrated my birthday on Tuesday instead of Sunday. . .things have been a bit crazy. Becca & Isaiah made my cake…never knew a box cake with store bought frosting could taste so good. For dinner Josh bought some chicken from a street vendor.

DSC_7525[Josh here. Amy’s sweet not to mention it, but the main thing I went out to buy was beef on a stick — like sissh kabobs. I bought four sticks, and grabbed a chicken thigh portion while I was at it, all grilled out by the road. The beef looked a little funny to me, but hey, this is Cambodia. When I got home and put it on the table, my doubts increased. When we bit into it, we realized I’d definitely made a mistake: this was not beef. After a visit to the meat department of a local supermarket today,, where I examined the different meats on offer, I’m pretty sure that what I bought was chicken gizzards on a stick. Maybe next time.]

In Cambodia. . .

DSC_7493

DSC_7489 DSC_7482We arrived safely in Cambodia, July 4th at 10PM. All our flights were good and the kids did well with all the traveling. In Seattle they misplaced our double stroller, which made the rest of our airport time in Seattle and Seoul a little tricky with three kids and 8 carry-on bags. In Seoul our gate was next to a playground.

DSC_7485 DSC_7486We were greeted by the Hancock family and Jeremy Farmer. We stayed at a CMA guesthouse for our first week, then we had to move into a hotel untol our home is ready for us to move in. We spent our first week finding housing, buying a car, getting needed documents, and buying furniture. Our kids loved playing with the six Farmer children.  We’re thankful to Jeremy and Bonnie Ruth for all the did to help us during our first week in Cambodia.

In praise of a good wife

IMG_20140704_224747

Almost two weeks ago we left our home in Spartanburg to begin the long trek to Cambodia. At every turn in the road (and sky!) I’ve rejoiced in my wife. She organized and carried out our packing, no small feat — indeed, one I shuddered at. She made sure the kids enjoyed their last days in America, and she prepared them for the transition. She bought and wrapped a pile of presents to entertain the kids on the plan. She helped me organize my final three weeks in America, probably the most productive weeks in my life! Above all, she encouraged me in our preparations to keep my eyes fixed on Christ and on the calling He has given us.

Then it was departure day. I had set my alarm for 4:15 am ET, but Amy was up at 3:45 or before to feed Anna. We got to bed around 1:30 pm ET the next day, more than 33 hours later. During that time, Amy had maybe an hour of sleep. Most of the time, she was holding Anna, and for a large portion of three flights, she was interacting with Becca or Isaiah, or both. For the last week, we’ve had a good schedule of sleeping at night, but Anna still needs regular feedings, so Amy’s sleep meter is still low. But she keeps going, keeps taking care of us all, keeps loving us.

This morning we all went to church together (an international church), and again I was in awe of my wife. She held Anna the whole service, while Anna cried much of the time. And it was very hot. And some of the time she had to help out Isaiah and Becca. All without complaining or being grouchy.

I thank God for Amy.

A Week Away (June 15-21)

DSC_7075

DSC_7064 DSC_7062Back when Josh suggested that we take a vacation in June, I thought it would be impossible. As much as I wanted to, going away the month before we headed for Cambodia seemed like a bad idea. But – Josh wasn’t kidding and we went. It was a wonderful time for our family to get away and take a break. Three different days we took a mile-long hike to a waterfall – Josh carried Isaiah on his back, I carried Anna in a front carrier, and Becca was a champ and walked the whole way!

DSC_7045DSC_7050 We’re very thankful for the week God gave us together. It was a great way to relax before our journey to Cambodia.

Josh and I also had our anniversary dinner while we were away.

Today we’re flying to Cambodia!

DSC_6946

Today at 8:08AM our flight leaves Atlanta and we are starting the trip to our new home! We will arrive in Seattle around 10:37AM (1:37 EST), fly out of Seattle at 12:25PM (3:25PM EST) and arrive in Seoul at 3:35PM (2:35AM EST), and finally fly out of Seoul at 6:45PM (5:45AM EST) and arrive in Phnom Penh at 10:10PM (11:10AM EST – July 4th).

We appreciate your prayers for our three flights: 5 hours, 11 hours, and 5 hours. The kids are excited about flying and we’ve got lots of activities packed to keep them busy. Thank you to all who contributed to their flying backpacks!

DSC_7397Please pray for Josh as he leads our family over to Cambodia. Pray that he will have wisdom to make decisions as we choose a home and buy other appliances, etc. during our first week there. Pray that God will give Josh good health.

DSC_6840Pray for me as I entertain the kids on the flight and help them with the time change (+11 hours from Eastern Time). Pray that the Lord will give me energy and keep my milk supply steady for Anna.

DSC_6825Pray for Becca to enjoy all the flying and to have grace, as it will be a long, long day for her. Pray that Becca will be secure in our love for her as we make so many transitions. Please pray that she will learn to love Cambodia and have a desire to learn the language.

DSC_6798Pray for Isaiah to be content on the flight and enjoy all the different activities. Pray that the mosquitoes will not devour him (they love him in the States).

DSC_7292Pray for Anna Grace to enjoying sleeping on the plane. Pray that she can adjust her feeding schedule to the new time zone.

Thank you for your prayers! As we adjust to life in Cambodia, I’ll still be posting on the blog; however, the next few weeks will just be pictures from the past month. It will be a while before I work on the blog.

[Note from Josh: if you use the WhatsApp mobile texting app, you can add Amy to your contacts list using her cell number; you can add me to your contacts list using mine. Even though our numbers will be useless as of today, you can still text us via WhatsApp. If you don’t use WhatsApp, ignore this paragraph.]
