Introducing 2C and Pre-KC

Last week was my first full week of teaching at Cochran Elementary School. The rotation for Special classes (music, art, gym, and computer) for grades K-6 is 5 consecutive days of each special every 6 weeks, so I see each class for one week out of each 6 week grading period. Last week I only had two classes per day . . . a nice way to be integrated into the school. (This week I have 7-8 classes per day — PreK-6th grade — in 45-minute back-to-back sessions. More on that later.) I’m currently working on trying to learn the names of my over 600 students. Or at least the 100+ I’ve had so far. Let me introduce you to class 2C and class Pre-KC.

  1. Wow, Amy!! That sounds like quite a work load!! And 600 students? I’d say that’s probably enough. 🙂 But I’m sure you’ll have all their names learned in no time and be a wonderful teacher, too. Can’t wait to hear more!

  2. Amy,
Thanks for posting, even though you are incredibly busy! I’ll be praying for you as you settle into this new routine! Wow…600 students! Have fun with the names! Hopefully Bible Club at CPBC was a small preparation for those names:-)

  3. When I was in elementary school, we had music once a week, every week…or something schedule roughly like that. Do you think the consecutive days, long break is superior to the regularly spaced approach? Or maybe you haven’t taught both enough to say. Curious.

  4. Hey, mwh. Since Amy’s not likely to have time to respond to comments for the next two years or so — and I turned in my last final paper for the semester yesterday — I’ll venture an answer.

No, it’s not an ideal schedule. It has the advantage of each class getting 5 consecutive days (so they remember things from class to class). But it has the disadvantage of then giving the students 5 weeks to forget what they learned. It’s also hard if you want to put together a program that includes, say, all the 4th – 6th grade classes!

Probably the schedule was devised with little thought of its educational consequences. (In fact, I don’t think that most of the Dallas government schools are on this system.)

  5. So glad to see that you posted. I have been terribly curious! Just remember–your first year is always the worst–it can ONLY get better! Praying for you. (My personal thoughts are that that system is for the birds!)

  6. Looks like posting them with their face and names is a good way to learn them! Amy, your classroom looks great and I love your expectations 🙂 Gotta have those 🙂 Make sure you get some pictures of yourself teaching.

  7. Very proud of you Amy, and your husbands comment was a needed rebuke to me. 😉 I wish Jon could say the same for me. I can’t wait to see you. I know the break may not be overly relaxing, but hopefully, you can get brief times of R & R.
