Becca’s 9th Birthday Party (2018)

Becca made a huge clown pinata. We were planning just to have a round balloon shaped pinata, but somehow it evolved into a clown and we were both very pleased with it. Becca requested a horse brownie cake.

We played pin the tail-on-the-horse, did the pinata, sang our Khmer Bible verse songs, and had cake. Our friends brought stuff to face paint and were kept busy the entire party painting kids’ faces or arms. We’re so thankful that the Hodgsons could come. They were a big help with the party and with Clara (Ezra slept through the entire party).

The pictures to the right and left are of our friends from our church.

The best part of the day was Becca’s delight at the end of the day. She was so happy with how everything turned out and that was the best present for me!

Happy 9th Birthday, Becca Grace!

This week we celebrated Becca’s 9th birthday! We started celebrating two weeks before her birthday with her birthday countdown calendar. This year it was themed on Walter Brook’s Freddy book, Freddy the Detective. Recently Becca has been joying reading through the Freddy books.

We had Becca’s yearly neighborhood party on Sunday afternoon. I’ll post pictures from that next week. For Becca’s birthday meal we had soft tacos, brownie cake (left over from her party), and did gifts. That night Becca got to stay up late with us. She chose to play Phase 10 and beat us both! A nice way to end her birthday!

Becca’s birthday pictures seem so much older than I think of her…she’s growing up. This year Becca has really grown in her love for reading. She’s often tucked away in a corner reading. She also has thanked me many times for teaching her how to read, now that she loves it so much. (This is especially meaningful since it was not always the most enjoyable part of our day.)

We’ve seen Becca grow in her ability to be thankful – she often thinks of specific ways to thank us for the things we do. She made thank you notes for all of us after her birthday. She’s very thoughtful and often makes me signs or posters telling me how much she loves us. Becca is creative in designing games and activities for her siblings to do and she loves leading them.

Becca has also grown in her ability to be content and delighted. It used to seem like there was always something that was a disappointment to her in the activities we would plan for her. Now Becca really focuses on the things she enjoyed and expresses her delight. We love seeing this spirit in her and it’s a big encouragement to us.

We’re so grateful for all God has done for Becca this past year and for the many ways we’ve seen her grow and mature. Thankful for God’s protection in her life. Thankful for our first and oldest daughter.

Terminal 21 & Girls’ Outings (Bangkok 2018)

About a 20-minute walk from our guesthouse is a huge mall, Terminal 21.  The mall is supposed to be a giant airport and each level is set up like a different famous world city: the Caribbean, Rome, London, Tokyo, Paris, Istanbul, and San Francisco (has two levels). The amazing thing is the bathrooms. They are beautiful and each patterned after the city.

Before Ezra was born, Becca and I took a special Mommy/Daughter trip to visit the mall for the first time. We were amazed. We rode lots of escalators and visited every bathroom! We stopped in San Francisco to eat ice cream at Swensen’s Ice Cream. Becca and I shared The Earthquake a 8-scoop sundae. (This was my last time to eat ice cream before Ezra was born…no more dairy products for me.)

Two weeks after Ezra was born, Anna and I took a Mommy/Daughter trip to the same place and enjoyed walking around for a bit and Anna had some ice cream.

We’ve been to the mall two other times to eat at Sunrise Taco (kids eat free on Mondays). And Brooke took the kids there two days after we got back from the hospital.

2! 4! 6! 8!

Since Isaiah turned six this month, we now have 2, 4, 6, 8 in our home! Life is full of excitement! For Isaiah’s birthday, we bought sports outfits and had them lettered for our little team.

We’re in the midst of rainy season – which means…lots of rain and mud. They other day, during a sunny spell, some kids filled a pit with water and turned it into a mud pool. Anna came in before I got out to take pictures. Clara just watched, but had mud splattered on her. Lots of fun! I’m very thankful we have a washing machine!!

A Week Without Daddy

Last week Josh was away at the Pastor’s Bible School in Ban Lung for five and a half days, from Sunday afternoon until Friday evening. We’re thankful for the smooth week we had without him (minus the toilet getting backed up from an accidental discarded spoon going down it). Each of the three old children got to have a special sleep-over with me on the nights Josh was away (I took Monday and Thursday nights off).

Each child got to plan his/her special evening. Becca wanted to do mineral face masks and play Monopoly. Anna wanted to paint our toenails, eat popcorn, and read books. Isaiah wanted to make a number chart on the computer, drink decaf coffee (we added whipped cream and Hershey’s chocolate syrup0, and read books. Clara didn’t need a special sleep-over, as she got up every morning before 5:30 (sometimes before 5!) to spend extra time with me. It was a busy and full week!

Anna’s New Bike

Last week Anna got a new big bike as a reward for quitting her night-time thumb sucking. We’re so proud of her! Anna was thrilled to ride her new bike and it’s so fun to watch her. The bike came with a cushioned seat in the back, a basket, and a bell – everything that Anna wanted.

Last week we also had a young sparrow visit us for several hours. His nest had fallen from a tree and some kids brought him to our house. He was quite friendly and loved sitting on Becca’s shoulder. After a night of rest, he flew out the window and we haven’t seen him since then.

Girls’ Retreat 2017 (Becca Grace)

Last month we celebrated Becca’s eighth birthday. The last official thing we did to celebrate was to have a mommy-daughter retreat. The Tuesday after Becca’s birthday’ Becca and I headed to a hotel to spend the night. Becca was so excited and filled her backpack full of activities for us to do together.

We arrived at our hotel around 1pm and had a full schedule until Josh and the kids joined us the next morning sometime after 10 to enjoy the pool for an hour.

Our first activity was swimming. I usually don’t get to swim with Becca, since I’m usually watching the younger kids. Becca was delighted to have a racing partner.

After swimming, we took advantage of the hot water and both took long hot showers. Then it was on to crafts. During our retreat we started making friendship bracelets and pom-pom animals, I taught Becca how to play Monopoly Deal and Phase 10, and we did face masks.  We had dinner at the hotel – Khmer sweet and sour. This year we finished reading The National Velvet (340 pages) and so we watched the movie (starring Elizabeth Taylor when we was a kid). Becca was thrilled.

In the morning we woke up and had tea in bed while we read the Bible. Then Becca wanted to take another hot shower (ah, the small pleasures of life). We ate our breakfast by the pool. Then we played Phase 10 until the rest of the family arrived.

Every year Becca and I usually have a sleep-over for her birthday, but it has always been when Josh was away and was only during the hours the other kids were in bed. Becca was thrilled to have so much extra time to spend together. She was thrilled that when she woke up in the morning, I was still in bed and not off helping someone else. We had a wonderful time.

My hope is to continue doing this each year and to someday have a yearly Girls’ Retreat with all our girls. I told Becca someday when she’s 35 I hope to still be doing this with her. We’ll give the husbands some extra funds to watch the kids and me and the mamas will go off for a night. 🙂

Happy 8th Birthday, Becca Grace!

This month we celebrate Becca’s 8th birthday! It’s always an exciting time of year and every year seems to get more involved. For this post I’m just going to focus on Becca’s party and a few of the other things we did to make the month special. In following post I’ll do more about our trip to Siem Reap and a blog about Becca’s accomplishments for the year.

We started out the celebrating with Becca’s Birthday Countdown Calendar which included a variety of things: a day swimming at a special pool in Ban Lung that had water slides, a trip to Siem Reap to ride horses, (Becca saved money all year to be able to do this more in a following post), gifts, snacks, and a few other things.

Becca’s big gift this year was a new bike: with a basket, bell, and seat to give people ride in the back. She is delighted to have a bike that is more her size now.

For Becca’s birthday, she wanted Cheerios for breakfast, hotdogs for lunch, and spaghetti for dinner. We had to move the hotdogs to dinner the night before her birthday, since it was too much to do everything on a Sunday.

We were delighted to have the Carson family join us. They work with the Tampuan and drive out our way every week to go to church, so it wasn’t too much farther for them to come to our house. They had lunch with us and then helped get ready for the party. It was nice to have some extra hands and Becca was delighted that Kathleen and Hannah could come to her party.

The big event was Becca’s neighborhood party. We had a party last year and our neighbor kids have been waiting all year long to do it again. This year Becca planned a horse themed party. She wanted  to have a horse cake and make a horse piñata.

The horse piñata was a challenge since we’ve never made anything besides a balloon shaped piñata. We were pleased with the results. (We did have trouble with the rats eating the piñata after we did the first layer!!) Becca spent weeks making all her own horse decorations for the party.

We had about 40 kids at the party, ranging from 1.5 years to 16 years old, plus we had 4 other adults besides ourselves. We’re never sure how people many will show up, since it’s an open invitation. About 11 of those kids were Jarai from our church. I made 48 cupcakes and a small extra cake, not knowing how many people would be there.

We started out with playing kickball. We’ve taught our neighbors to play at Bible Club and it’s a favorite game of Becca. Then we moved on to pin the tail on the horse. Becca designed the game herself. It was really fun to watch everyone play.

Next we did the piñata – which is what everyone was looking forward to. After everyone, including some adults, had a chance at it, I whacked it open. Then I decided it would be safer and happier for all if I stood on our ladder and threw the candy out. Exciting times!

Before cake, we sang the Khmer songs we’ve written for Genesis 1:1, Exoduc 20:3 Romans 3:23, and another Khmer song I’ve written. It was so neat to see our Khmer neighbors and our Jarai friends from church singing together (we’ve taught the songs at our Bible Club and at our church).

After singing we had cake and that was the end of the official party! Kids stayed around playing until dark.

Then we had our spaghetti supper, did family gifts for Becca and put everyone to bed….except Becca! It’s a tradition in our family to let the birthday child stay up late on their birthday. Becca, Josh, and I played Monopoly until 10:30!

I will admit that Becca’s birthday often comes at a very busy time of year. We were in Ban Lung overnight Friday for the expat Thanksgiving get together. We also had overnight guests in our home that Wednesday. I think I was so tried from doing everything – cooking, cleaning, prepping – that by the weekend I didn’t have much heart for running a party or going to one. Thankfully, I asked several close friends to pray for me and I woke up Sunday feeling more motivated. I was very thankful. The party went well and we were all very pleased. The best part was the Becca completely enjoyed her day and went on and on about how wonderful it was – everything. That made my day! Happy Birthday Becca! We love you!

An Early Birthday Gift for Becca…

dsc_5913

dsc_5856

dsc_5858November is Becca’s birthday month, but we started by celebrating in October with an early birthday present. Becca loves horses and the last time we were in Siem Reap we saw a poster for a place that does horseback riding. We decided it would be a perfect birthday surprise.

dsc_5869

dsc_5867dsc_5871In October we had to go to Siem Reap to get immunizations for Clara, so we planned the extra activity. We gave Becca an hour horseback ride as an early birthday present. She was thrilled!

dsc_5915dsc_5884Josh and the younger kids rode in a horse-cart while Becca and I rode on horses. The morning was a success for all! Happy Early Birthday to our horse-loving girl!

Unexpected Mother’s Day Gift

DSC_4094

DSC_4115 DSC_4113Sunday. For many expat moms attending village churches in developing world countries, it’s not a day to look forward to.  Long story short, I try to sit and participate in a service while hot and sweaty as unhappy children crawl over me or ask me when it’s going to be over. (I was encouraged when a veteran missionary told me they never looked forward to Sundays either.)

DSC_4102 DSC_4105This past Sunday we visited a Jarai village church. Josh was going to be preaching, which meant I would get all the sweaty unhappy kids to myself. We both rolled our eyes when Josh said he hoped I would have a good Mother’s Day.

IMG_20160508_093605 IMG_20160508_103627We arrived at the church and were pleasantly surprised at how nice the building was: they had tile floors and fans. As the service started, our older kids chose to go to the children’s service. Isaiah returned shortly after, but Becca stayed. When the Jarai children came in to sing for the service, Becca joined them up front and did the motions to the song while the other kids sang (this was a huge surprise to us). Then we watched her go back with the kids and shortly after saw her running hand in hand with two Jarai girls playing games outside. This doesn’t happen at our Khmer church. Typically the Khmer kids play in one group and our kids play in another. (Even with the other great MK’s in our town, our kids haven’t yet found their niche.) I cannot tell you what a blessing it was to this mama’s heart to see her daughter running and smiling and being included. It’s been a long time.

 IMG_20160509_105900

IMG_20160509_110653IMG_20160509_082646At one point while Josh was preaching Becca came running in for a drink. She stopped and gave him the big thumbs up. Later when we asked her about it she said she had thought it was a Khmer man speaking and was surprised to turn and see Josh preaching. “You sounded just like a Khmer person, Daddy.”

 IMG_20160509_082608

DSC_4109DSC_4111So there I was: sitting on the floor in a Jarai church service with Clara in my arms and Anna on my lap, listening to my husband preach in Khmer, watching my daughter outside making friends while my son (who said he was a dirty monster) chased them. My family was happy and they belonged. Thanks be to God. It was the perfect Mother’s Day gift.

Note: Anna remained happy as long as she could sit on my lap, and as long as the raisins were abundant.

Happy 6th Birthday Becca Grace!

DSC_2367

DSC_2355 DSC_2398Thanksgiving 6 years ago, Becca Grace was born: 2 lbs 0.8 oz, and 14 inches. (She now weighs 39.4lbs and is 43 inches tall.) We’re thankful for the many ways God protected her life during her premature birth, and then when she had an abdominal tumor right before she turned 3.  Happy Birthday Becca!

ICU 11-27-20092 DSC_2399 DSC_2394 DSC_2377

DSC_2330 DSC_2408This year has included fun with new things: learning to ride a bike without training wheels, learning to jump rope while someone else turns it, learning to read (Becca is already halfway through Level 2 of All About Reading; we started Level 1 mid-August), and this week Becca lost her 4th tooth.

2015-11-22

DSC_2376 DSC_2373We started celebrating Becca’s birthday on November 1st with her birthday countdown calendar. Like last year, everyday held some sort of treat, whether a gift, snack, sleepover, motorcycle ride, etc. One of the treats was making paper machine creations, which was a multi-day project that we just finished this morning.

DSC_2427 DSC_2429For Becca’s birthday we had Cheerios for breakfast and egg salad for lunch…no rice. After breakfast, Isaiah gave Becca the presents he bought for her. She was quite pleased to have a tape measure.

DSC_2452 DSC_2438 DSC_2440 DSC_2435

DSC_2474 DSC_2475Becca requested to have a family-only party with pizza. We had Becca’s traditional panda cake and played pin the nose on the panda.

DSC_2486 DSC_2488 DSC_2489 DSC_2492 DSC_2425

DSC_2478DSC_2479It was a full day, week, and month of birthday activities and this Mommy is ready for bed!

2015-07-18-09h29m03 2015-07-18-09h23m31As I reflect on Becca’s birthday it doesn’t seem like I’ve been a mommy for 6 years. I make a lot of mistakes and am constantly growing in my parenting. I need God’s help every day as I parent our little ones and am so thankful for the grace He constantly gives. One of the things I think about a lot is parenting for the future. Right now I’m parenting Becca to be a faithful follower of Christ when she leaves the home and parenting her for the relationship I desire with her when she leaves our home.

Tomorrow we celebrate Thanksgiving with many of the missionaries in the area. So it’s another day of celebrating. Then we get ready for our Kachok guests Sunday evening through Wednesday morning.
